02/29/08 It's been a while since I updated this site. Been kind of busy and unfortunately I lost a bit of time dealing with the flu. Do whatever you can to protect yourself from the flu this year - it's brutal! Wednesdays presentation went well, the good folks out at the Cascades were very warm and welcoming and my delivery has gotten a bit smoother. One thing that keeps coming up during these presentations is the protection of the social security number; the recommendation is that you do not keep your social security card in your wallet or purse but one thing that people keep mentioning is that certain cards like the Medicare card or the Military ID card have the social security number printed right on them. This is a problem and a telling indicator of the sorry state of affairs the whole identity theft issue is in. Here we have 1 branch of the government (the FTC) desperately trying to educate people to protect their social security numbers by keeping things like the social security card locked up tight and then we have other branches of the government printing these same numbers on ID cards and requiring people to carry them on there persons! Ok, so that is a quandary. If you have to keep a card on you that has your social security number on it then do your best to keep it hidden. Maybe you can hide it in your car or keep it in a place separate from your other cards so if your purse or wallet does get stolen that number isn't in the same place as your drivers license. You get the idea - be creative! The bottom line is protect your social security number. Keep it safe and be aware of where it is. Another issue that has been brought to my attention is that some of the issues of the Home Town News are not running my column every week. I spoke with Tammy Raits (my editor) and she has explained that with the slowdown in the economy, some editions are having trouble; when advertising is down they don't have enough space to run everything they would like which means that some columns get cut. Fortunately there are multiple editions of the Home Town News spanning from Palm Beach County up to Daytona Beach and my column does indeed make it into at least one or more editions every week. The Home Town News Website also does carry my column every week regardless of which edition it makes it into so if you don't see me in your local edition, go to HomeTownNewsOL.com and you can read my latest there. 01/12/08 Hi Everyone, thanks for visiting my website. 2008 has started out pretty well, I did my presentation on Wednesday, January 9th at the TCCUG and it went pretty well (a lot less "Ummms and Ahhhhhs then my last presentation) and I'm gearing up for another speech at Bare Foot Bay computer Club in Florida on 01/25/08 (don't know if thats open to the public but I'll find out - check back, OK?). Have a few booked for February too so I'm glad I'm not the type to get scared speaking in public or else I'd be a nervous wreck! ;) January is starting to unfold pretty well; all the people who told me in December to wait until after the holidays are starting to come around so I think there may be something to this whole computer fixing business after all! Lots of people who just got new equipment for Christmas and need help setting it up are also starting to call so I guess that's a good sign too. One of my favorite sites, http://www.gizmodo.com, is getting a lot of press these days, first for some videos of an interview they did some time during the second week of January (see video above) with Bill Gates and because of a prank they played at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Seems the boys at Gizmodo decided to walk around the convention with "TV B Gone" remotes and thought it would be funny to shut down different TVs during presentations. You can click here to see the carnage they created. I don't know - it was funny in a juvenile way but I can't help to put myself in the place of the presenters; if my equipment just started to shutdown on its own like that I would probably have a hard time seeing the humor in it. Anyway, click this link and you decide - harmless prank or criminal mischief? Email me with your opinion and I may (or may not) most your comments here. Happy Holidays everyone! I hope 2007 has been a great year to one and all. Welcome to my website; this is the companion site to "Compute This...," my Computer column in The HomeTown News. I've been writing Compute This... since December of 1996 (so I guess that makes it 11 years now!) and have always thought that I should do something like this. Being the procrastinator that I am you can see how long that took! Anyway, The HomeTown News has been awesome - Steve Erlanger (my publisher) is a top notch guy and it is always a privilege to be involved with his projects. Tammy Raits (the Managing Editor) is also someone I'm proud to work with. Tammy has been editing my stuff before it goes to press since the mid 90's - if you see grammatical errors here it's because I'm doing this without Tammy, my "editorial safety net." I can't talk about the paper without mentioning Phil Galdys. Phil is the VP of production and taught me first hand about things like deadlines and that Macs and PCs CAN coexist on the same network! Anyways, welcome to ComputeThisOnline.com. Comeback and refresh often; I will be adding (and removing) content to this site constantly and promise to provide content that is helpful and timely.
